Luminol by fellow ochem student Meghan

This week, we made luminol in the lab. Everyone had success with their products which means that the luminol glowed brightly with a blue-white aura. I have a test in organic chemistry this week on Tuesday and an environment science exam on Wednesday.

My poor boys have been sick again with the flu this week. D1 started vomiting yesterday after having his vision and hearing screening done at the health department for school, and D2 started vomiting while at daycare today. Everyone seems to be feeling better now. Yesterday, before D1 started upchucking everywhere, he got to spend some time in the kindergarten classroom when I dropped off the results of his screening. He had a blast, and it was hard for him to say good-bye. Apparently, D1 does not have any hearing problems even though he does ask, “what? and what did you say?” a lot. The nurse said that he probably just has selective hearing, lol. Typical!

D1 is now obsessed with Minecraft, so there is a lot of talk about creepers (scary monsters) and obtaining wood to build homes in our house lately. Our conversations now sound like, “thank you for hitting the space bar, mommy, so I don’t die.” It’s all kind of funny, and I enjoy playing these kinds of games with him.

I also registered for some of my fall 2012 classes such as biochemistry and molecular genetics! Yay!

Compilation of some of my favorite course evaluations found on Berate My Professor.

I got some good lulz from perusing the site, Berate My Professor. Some of it is just sad, but a lot of it is funny. I comprised some of my favorites for my organic teacher. I include jokes with each lab report that I turn in, so hopefully she will enjoy these too!

At the park, kids tell me the darnest things. Most of it is just plain demoralizing:

Kid #1 tells me while D3 and I are about to go down the big twirly slide: “Your butt is too big.” Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 2 came riding up to me on his bike: “You look like that girl from Ever After. I can’t remember her name, but you look like that girl.” Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 3: “Your baby is eating french fries with sand.” Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 4: “Your mom makes a really good dinosaur,” while D1, D2, and another kid are playing…dinosaurs. Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 5: “Are you a science teacher?” What? Where did this come from? Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 6: “Are all of those your kids?” Um, yeah. Thanks kid, really.
Kid # 7: “I don’t want to play with him [D1] because he is a boy.” Thanks kid, really.

That’s it for now.

Tornado 3/2012 by Shelly

We had very bad weather last week. There was a tornado just north of where we live, but since then, the weather has been beautiful. I’ve been trying to get as much cleaning as possible done. My hands are blistered from raking today. Also, everyone is better from getting the flu. Yay!

The kids are sick. In organic on Thursday, I got called out of the class since my middle child (D2) was vomiting at daycare. D3 came down with the flu yesterday, and now D1 doesn’t feel good. My poor kidlets! Thank you, mom, for taken good care of D3 yesterday. Hopefully, everyone feels better soon. It seems to last a couple days once you get sick.

In other news, I bought D1 a Wii. D1 likes to watch me play Mario. He is obsessed with Mario at the moment. I think that I like Mario Galaxy the best thus far. I think that we’ll make it a habit to play a little bit before bedtime together as part of our special time since I enjoy Mario also greatly. He also wrote his first message via facebook to my sister who lives in Utah (he wrote “hi”). D2 got to spend the night at my parent’s house. I hope that he had a good time, although, we missed him. D3 is super into My Little Pony. Her first obsession!

I rescheduled my MCAT to be taken on July 16th instead of this week. There is no way that I can study for the MCAT 12 hours a day with my regular class and work because that is what is the kind of schedule that they have on Student Doctor Network. I’m not taking any classes for credit this summer, and I will only focus on my kids, work, and MCAT preparation. That sounds like a full load already, anyhow. Although, it will put me a little behind with applying this year (I still plan on submitting my application for medical school in June), I feel good about this plan even if it means that I have to go through a second application cycle next year.

Today, a police officer brought a bag full of bones into the emergency room for one of the doctors to verify if they are animal or human. The doctor shrugged and said, “probably a Leprechaun.” Sadly, some of the bones look like they might be of a small child. They are being sent away for further examination.
